 And, yes, I say editions because there were two: it came out first in England and was called The Whale; the American edition (which came out a month later) was the one called Moby-Dick. And, believe it or not, the two editions are different -- the British version has some bits edited out that might have offended people's political or religious sensibilities.

Длинный роман с многочисленными лирическими отступлениями, проникнутый библейской образностью и многослойным символизмом, не был понят и принят современниками. Переоткрытие «Моби Дика» произошло в 1920-е годы^[1].
Роман посвящён американскому писателю-романтику Натаниэлю Готорну, близкому другу автора, «в знак преклонения перед его гением».


Нанта́кет (англ. Nantucket) — остров в Атлантическом океане. Расположен в 48,3 км к югу от мыса Кейп-Код и в 24 км к востоку от острова Мартас-винъярд, от которого отделён Маскегетским проливом. Длина острова составляет 24 км, ширина колеблется от 5 до 10 км.
Остров входит в состав штата Массачусетс. Остров обитаем, в административном плане остров имеет статус города и округа (таким образом, округ и город Нантакет объединены).

В конце XVIII века остров играл ведущую роль в китобойном промысле, к порту было приписано 125 китобойных судов.
В течение XIX века значение Нантакета как порта шло на убыль, а к концу века китобойный промысел и вовсе потерял значение в связи с тем, что был изобретён процесс перегонки нефти в бензин и керосин (до этого в керосиновых лампах использовался китовый жир).

В XX веке основой экономики острова стал туризм.
В связи с этим 13 декабря 1966 года комплекс исторической застройки Нантакета был внесён в Национальный реестр исторических мест США.
На Нантакете происходит действие первых глав романа «Моби Дик». Он был портом приписки китобоя «Пекод», на котором путешествуют герои романа.

Фабула романа во многом основана на реальном случае, произошедшем с американским китобойным судном «Эссекс». Судно водоизмещением 238 тонн вышло на промысел из порта в штате Массачусетс в 1819 году. В течение почти полутора лет экипаж бил китов в южной части Тихого океана, пока один кашалот не положил этому конец. 20 ноября 1820 года в Тихом океане китобойное судно было несколько раз протаранено гигантским китом.
20 матросов на трёх крошечных шлюпках добрались до необитаемого острова Хендерсон, входящего ныне в состав британских островов Питкерн. На острове была большая колония морских птиц, которая стала для моряков единственным источником пищи. Дальнейшие пути моряков разделились: трое остались на острове, а большая часть решила отправиться на поиски материка. От высадки на ближайшие известные острова отказались, — боялись местных племён каннибалов, решили доплыть до Южной Америки. Голод, жажда и каннибализм погубили почти всех, только через 95 дней после нападения кита, капитана Полларда и ещё одного моряка спасло другое китобойное судно. Первый помощник Чейз, спасшийся на другой шлюпке, написал отчёт об этом приключении
